We drove early in the morning to Zermatt. The mountain village of Zermatt is one of the great ski and climbing centres of the world. Now, there is no way you can drive to Zermatt (unless you LIVE there). So the only option is to take the train. If you are driving, like i did, you drive to Tasch and park your car in the Terminal Tasch. This doesn't cost much, less than 10 Euros for about 5-6 hrs. From this car park, you can take the train to Zermatt, which again is around 10 euros per person for a return trip.

Since we went in August, skiing was not an option, but the place is still worth the visit and you can find amazing hiking routes. Some good websites: Ski-Zermatt, Zermatt, WikiTravels.
You can just walk in the city, or take a cable car to the mountain tops.
One of the best ways to see the mountains is to take the train up the mountain to the peak Gornergrat. The ride is awesome, and there is even a restaurant at the top. But unfortunately, the return ticket is around 70 Euros!! So what we did was take the train just about half-way up and dismounted at Riffelalp, a lot of people actually do choose this options, specially the ones who love hiking.
From Riffelalp, we hiked a little, and you can actually catch the view of Matterhorn from here, weather permitting. Then we hiked all the way down, through the forests, falls, and streams, to Zermatt, which took around 2 hours, but was totally worth it.
