Just came back from venice. Nice city but can be a bit expensive for people who don't earn in Euros :)
If you get a hotel just on the mainland, they are not very expensive. But what's the fun in that, right?
The hotels on the main island are a bit expensive, even for the not-so-high season, such as in October. Alternatively, you CAN book a private room in a hostel. With my wife, we reserved: Residenza Santa Croce. This is a very nice hostel and the private rooms are great. And is almost right next to the train station, and the bus station if you are coming from the airport. They give you a map and indicate places where you can eat cheap.
